Overview of Teaching Poetry at school

  1. Reading the poem aloud

  2. It is important for the teacher to model best practices while reading the poem aloud to the class. Care should be taken with pauses and stress patterns to create the right effect.

  3. Discussion

  4. Discussion should focus on likes and dislikes and immediate reactions to the thoughts expressed in the poem. Pictures can be used to make ideas clearer.

  5. Reading silently

  6. The class should read the poem silently to understand the lines better.

  7. Group work

  8. The class should read the poem aloud in groups to fully grasp the music and rhythm of the poem.

  9. Analyses

  10. Analyses of the structure and language of the poem will help reinforce understanding. Attention to ‘poetic’words, imagery, poetic devices, length of lines, rhyme scheme and sound effects will enhance appreciation of the poem. This study should be included from class four upwards.
